Ages 0–8

Early Childhood

At home. Informal basics, language, and social foundations, ahead of formal residential study.

Ages 8–18

Core Schooling — Brahmacharya

Foundational texts, grammar, astronomy, and logic, alongside physical conditioning and daily chores.

Initiation

Upanayana

Typically administered between ages 8 and 12, the sacred-thread ceremony marked a spiritual and intellectual rebirth into the Brahmacharya (student) stage of life. Entry ages varied by class: Brahmins at roughly 8, Kshatriyas at roughly 11, and Vaishyas at roughly 12.

Graduation

Samavartana

After a standard minimum of 12 years of residential study, and typically between ages 21 and 25, the Samavartana rite involved a ceremonial bath (Snana), conferring the status of Vidya-snataka. Students then pledged Guru Dakshina before entering the Grihastha (householder) phase of life.
